Let me first start off saying I love retirement. It's everything I thought it would be and more but (a very big but) sometimes I wonder if there are any jobs out there I would come out of retirement for. Up until Friday night I couldn't think of one...until I went to the New York Knicks game. No, it's not to become a basketball player, even though that has crossed my mind, but to work in marketing or PR for the organization. For a team that hasn't won a meaningful game in years and one of the highest payrolls in the league, they are a mediocre team at best. They are the Redskins of the NBA. I don't want to get into that as I could create a whole new blog about the Redskins.
Went to the Knicks/Cavs game this past Friday night and you could have fooled me that there was an actual basketball game being played. It also seemed like there were more women than men and they were dressed like they were going to the club. I had to do a double to make sure I was at the Garden and not 1OAK. I'm not sure if the organization realizes the Knicks aren't good or what their deal is, but there were so many distractions from the actual game my head was spinning. That also probably had to do with the fact that they were giving out free Amare bobble heads. For shelling out 240 bucks for the ticket (and by shelling out I mean my old co-worker's fathers company) I wanted a little more than a bobble head and waitress service, and boy did I get it. There was a guest Friday night DJ a few sections over accompanied with dancers, towel tosses (which I ripped out of an old ladies hand, ehh don't really want to talk about that), and free foam fingers which our section won highlighted with being on the jumbo-tron in the 4th quarter. I made a sign promoting my blog but unfortunately that didn't make it. The place was literally rocking and I'm sure it wasn't from the subways below. And this was against the awful Cavs and the .500 Knicks, but it was an awesome time. It was such a fun time I don't even remember who won. Checked the paper the next day and saw the Knicks blew a 12 point 4th quarter lead and lost. Ohh well, I guess that meant the marketing team did a good job. On second thought, who am I kidding, that seems like a hard job, I don't want that, I almost forgot, "Hey, I'm retired at 28!"
the league and media make it out to seem like the knicks are entitled to be good because theyre in NYC. they have solid fans and a great arena.....but they have ONE title in their entrie history. my pistons have won 3 times as many titles and are not even considered to be a premier franchise. at the time of the melo trade, all the headlines were like "IMPROVED knicks just got better!" Improved??? despite amare putting up huge numbers, they were a .500 team this year- in a very weak eastern conference. that's the NY bias for you. keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI heard on the news the other day that the Knicks are the best grossing team in the NBA and that's the hottest ticket in Da City.Did ya see any stars? And I mean movie, TV, music, not in the sky! Hey, your blog is good. You should get some advertisement and make money off it. A new job???
