I used to never eat breakfast. Even when I worked I would usually just grab a Starbucks iced tea or a Diet Coke and some pretzels. Healthy, I know. But now in my retirement stage of my life I have more time to actually get up and eat breakfast. I went downstairs to Walgreens to pick me up some cereal. I almost had a stroke when I saw a box of Lucky Charms was $5.79! Yeah, no thanks, I'll stick to my Eggos. The next time I went back I noticed these unbelievable sales on specific cereal for around $1.99. But because they are discounted so heavily, they are usually sold out within a few hours. People in New York are vultures; they will pay thousands of dollars in rent but when there is a sale on cereal they destroy the Walgreens aisles. For the Lucky Charms and Fruit Loop sales, all that was left on a Wednesday was scratch marks and a bent cabinet holder.
Luckily I have a friendly and equally cheap doorman who I was chatting with about these damn cereal discounts. He told me the new sale cycle starts every Monday but not to fret if busy, (clearly he works the night shift and probably thinks I actually do something productive like "work" during the day), you can get a "raincheck" on any discount which is sold out. Amazing! I had no idea. Walgreens doesn't advertise this obviously but its law or something. Needed to check this out, and low and behold he was right. I got a "raincheck" on my Grape Nuts. (Yes, I like Grape Nuts.) They give you a slip with the date and sale amount and whenever they restock even with the original price, you get the sale price. I love this idea so much I only shop at Walgreens now and I try to only buy sale items. Too bad Walgreens isn't a real supermarket, they pretty much only sell snacks and junk food. Oh well, my kitchen is now stocked with Pringles, Fruit Loops, Coco Puffs, Combos and frozen pizza. The sales are too good I would be losing money if I didn't pick up these items. I gotta look out for these things, "Hey, I'm Retired at 28!"
